Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is where we zoom all the way out and look at your story as a whole (aka the fun part where I get to fully geek out). This is the heart of the process. The big-picture work that makes everything actually tie together at the end.

We’ll dig into your plot, structure, pacing, character arcs, tension, world-building, dialogue, point of view…all the moving pieces that turn a draft into a story readers can’t put down.

This isn’t about fixing commas. It’s about making sure your story flows, builds, and hits the way it’s supposed to. Think of it as strengthening the bones of your book so everything else can shine.

This is perfect if you’ve finished your manuscript, done a few rounds of self-editing, maybe gotten feedback from beta readers or critique partners, and now you’re ready for honest, in-depth, professional feedback.

Deliverables/process below:

01.

Complete the intake form on the Contact page.

02.

I will complete a sample edit of the first 10,000 words to see if we're a good fit.

03.

We will complete onboarding of contract signing, deposit to secure your spot on the calendar, and manuscript delivery.

Developmental Editing In Progress

Once I receive your manuscript, I begin by reading through it once to fully understand your story. Then, I go through it again in detail, adding comments, notes, and suggestions throughout the manuscript to help you strengthen your story.

In addition to the marked up manuscript with in-line and margin comments, suggestions, reactions, and praise, I prepare a comprehensive editorial report in a separate document.

This report may include:

  • Cover Letter

  • Editorial Letter

  • Table of Contents

  • Report

This is a booklet because it will be 30+ pages with detailed, actionable editorial suggestions/feedback.

This approach ensures you have everything you need to make your revisions as effective and successful as possible. After you receive the developmental report, I recommend taking a little time to read through and digest everything, because the feedback is comprehensive.

Once you’ve had a chance to review, the next step is to schedule a Zoom call. During this meeting, we’ll go over any questions you have, clarify feedback, and make sure you feel confident moving into your next round of revisions.

This ensures you understand the recommendations fully and have the guidance you need to make your manuscript as strong as possible.
